What does beixo mean and how do you pronounce it?

The name beixo comes from a contraction of the Portuguese word for drive shaft: 'eixo' and the letter 'b'. You pronounce it as bɛisjo, or beisjo. The 'x' is pronounced 'sj' in Portuguese.

The b has three reasons: first, because at the time beixo was founded Startpage.co.uk was very important to be found. Since Startpagina classified alphabetically, you were therefore ranked nicely high in the results with a b.

Second, the 'b' of Portuguese word 'eixo' in terms of sound makes the word beijo. And that means 'kiss', well sympathetically.

Finally, we suspected - and it turned out to be true - that the 'x' in eixo would be pronounced as 'kz' in Dutch. And then, with beixo, you have the sound of the English word 'bike'.

How are warranty claims handled?

Beixo believes in its products and will do its utmost to keep you satisfied. Should you still have a claim, you should report it to your dealer. After the discovery of any defect, you are obliged to stop using the bicycle in question immediately and, furthermore, to do everything possible to prevent (further) damage.

Does beixo also offer insurance?

Yes. Beixo works with ENRA for insurance.

ENRA's bicycle insurance policies can be taken out for three or five years for a one-off premium. You can choose between theft insurance or hull insurance (including theft). The hull insurance includes recourse legal expenses insurance, accident/occupant insurance and free breakdown assistance for the chosen term.

ENRA offers separate insurance for E-bikes. With the hull insurance (including theft) you also get free breakdown assistance for the chosen term. Optional warranty cover is also part of this insurance.

On this website take out bicycle insurance directly with ENRA.

The beixo electric folding bike and moisture

The components of the beixo electrics are splash-proof and can withstand quite a bit of rain. However, store your beixo preferably in a dry covered area. If the electric bicycle is always outside and/or has to endure a lot of water, shield the components as much as possible.

TIP: Use a steering wheel cover or a travelbag.

A display on an E-bike is designed to be unaffected by heavy rain. However, when the handlebars are folded down, the display sits with the underside up. And since this is where the cable goes in, the display at the bottom is not waterproof.

Moisture and/or water damage in the components are excluded from warranty.

Can I also collect a beixo?

If you choose to collect your beixo from a dealer or in De Bilt, we will inform you when the bike is ready to ride. Picking up your beixo is possible by appointment and during the opening hours of the relevant dealer or of beixo.

How should I maintain my beixo?

Maintain beixo like any other bike. Except that cleaning, lubricating and tightening the chain is no longer necessary!
Tip: apply anti-rust spray to the bolts and nuts and regularly spray the entire beixo with silicone spray and rub it out with a cotton cloth. Dirt adheres hard to silicone, so your beixo will stay nice for longer.
When cleaning your bike, never use a high-pressure sprayer. With this, you can damage the electronic components but also, for example, spray the grease out of the bearings.

A folding bike has folding points and they do need extra attention. It is recommended to have your beixo serviced regularly - at least annually - at a beixo dealer. This will extend the life of the bike considerably.

Shimano recommends servicing its hubs every two years or 5,000 kilometres. This involves cleaning and lubricating the hub.

Can my bike shop repair a beixo?

Yes, a beixo can be repaired by any bike shop. And with the exception of the cardan drive, standard parts are used that are known to every bicycle shop. We therefore refer you to your own bike shop for repairs in the first instance. If there is cold feet, we will call your cycle shop beforehand to explain the problem and introduce him to beixo. In 99% of cases, this removes all doubt.

Are spare parts available?

An electric bike is not cheap and, we believe, should last quite a few years. However, e-bike technology is changing rapidly. To promote durability, we believe that beixo spare parts should be available for a longer period of time. We support our technology for at least ten years and do everything we can to keep parts in stock for this period. Unfortunately, we do depend on our suppliers.

Most specific beixo parts are available separately through our webshop. Is your part not listed? Send an e-mail to info@beixo.com. From a cap for the drive shaft to a new seat post.

Can a beixo rust?

Beixo is made almost entirely of aluminium and therefore hardly rusts. To prevent oxidation, beixo is treated with a very strong transparent polyurethane varnish. All bolts and nuts are made of stainless steel. To prevent oxidation in the future, you can use silicone spray. Weather conditions and other factors may cause oxidation, for which we are not liable.

Update October 2021: Given the current tightness in the raw materials and parts market, it is unfortunately not possible to guarantee the highest quality at the moment. It is therefore possible that a certain part, screw or nut may corrode despite everything. If this is the case, please report it to us. We can send you replacement parts if necessary.

Will a beixo fit in my car?

Experience shows that a beixo folding bike fits in most cars, motorhomes and caravans.

Of course, this strongly depends on the model beixo and the type of car. We offer sufficient space and test models in De Bilt to fit and measure calmly. In fact, we have never had to disappoint anyone.

How often should I lubricate a propeller shaft?

The rear gears of the cardan shaft should be well greased. If there is too little grease on the rear gears, it announces itself. The transmission becomes less smooth, you feel a vibration instead of the cardan running smoothly. This is the time to take action.

For lubrication, use a grease that lays a nice film over the gears. Beixo recommends Shimano ball bearing grease or a similar product. To lubricate the rear sprocket, remove the grey cover. This can be done by removing the two screws that hold the cover in place. Clean the side of the sprocket with an old cloth and then apply ample new grease. Rotate the pedals for a few seconds to distribute the grease well and refit the dust cap.

The gears at the bottom bracket do not require any maintenance. After all, it is a closed system so no dirt or moisture gets into the bottom bracket.

How do I remove the rear wheel?

With a beixo, you dismantle the rear wheel in no time. (De-)mounting is very simple and much easier than with a chain bike. After all, you don't have to remove and re-tension the chain. Let alone the hassle of a chain case.

How does it work?

Loosen the two screws on the dust cover, unscrew the wheel nuts, release the brake and the wheel can be taken out. As everything only fits in one way, putting it back in is also child's play. What is important is that the parts are replaced in the same way. So pay particular attention to the order of the washers on the right side before removing the wheel from the bike. To maintain a smooth and noiseless drive, these should be reassembled in exactly the same way.

Tip: first tighten the wheel nut on the drive shaft side, this will centre the wheel. Only then tighten the wheel nut on the left side of the bike.

How does the guarantee work?

Beixo gives a two-year full warranty on the frame and the cardan shaft. On the other parts, we apply the standard manufacturer's warranty. This is one year.

For electric bikes bought after 1 January 2016, a two-year warranty period applies to the battery and other electric parts.

Only the first owner can claim warranty. Wear and moisture are excluded from the warranty. The warranty is void in case of incorrect mounting of accessories, dismantling of the cardan shaft and improper use such as stunt riding. In the first instance, we refer you to your own cycle shop. He will be able to solve 9 out of 10 problems.

Because beixo believes in the quality delivered, we operate a goodwill scheme based on depreciation after the standard warranty period.

A folding bike is a specific product with folding points in the frame. Beixo advises its customers to have the folding bike checked annually by a professional.

Shimano provides a two-year warranty for its items after purchase. It is important that proper maintenance has been performed though.

How does the right of withdrawal work?

Not satisfied?
Although we do our utmost to deliver your order complete and undamaged, things can of course go wrong from time to time. Should this be the case, please contact us at include.

Right of withdrawal
When purchasing standard products from our webshop online, as a consumer you always have the option of dissolving the agreement without giving reasons for at least fourteen days. This period starts the day after receipt of the product.
During this period, however, you must handle the product and its packaging with care. The product can only be unpacked or used to the extent necessary to assess whether you wish to keep the product. If you exercise your right of withdrawal, the product must be returned with all delivered accessories and - if reasonably possible - in its original state and packaging, in accordance with the reasonable and clear instructions provided by us. For a cancellation of an order, we always charge a €15.00 administration fee.

This does not apply to custom and special orders.

Shop purchase
When purchasing from our showroom in De Bilt, the above does not apply. For cancelled orders, we always charge 15% over the total purchase amount.

What is the current delivery time?

For current delivery time: call or email us.

Delivery time, if in stock, is approximately one week. If a product is unexpectedly out of stock, we will inform you within a short period of time. So you are always aware of the delivery time. It goes without saying: our products come with good service. Delivery is part of this. Beixo works together with Distri-Net for this. They will contact you about a suitable delivery date. At your home or office, the driver and mechanic takes the bicycle out of its packaging and performs the final actions to deliver the bike in tip-top condition. Beixo delivers throughout the Netherlands and Flanders.

How fast does a battery charge?

Beixo's charger charges up to two amps per hour. This means that an empty 12-amp battery may need up to six hours of charging. However, faster charging means faster battery wear. This is why we chose this type of charger.

The charger works on 220 volts, but can also be used on 12 or 24 volts via an inverter. Handy when travelling in the camper or on the boat. Make sure your inverter has a pure sine wave. Otherwise, there is a risk that the charger will fail.

Don't have an inverter? Then beixo has a special battery charger which runs on 12 volts, via the cigarette lighter of the car or motorhome.

What is the range of a beixo electric folding bike?

Beixo supplies three different capacity batteries: a 9 amp (A) / 324 Watt hours (Wh), a 12A/432Wh and a 14A/504Wh. It is very difficult to give an exact range for these. This is because it depends on a lot of factors:

  • The conditions (headwind, hills, frequent acceleration, temperature and cycling with a lot of weight)
  • The speed (drive no faster than 21 to 22 km/h)
  • Driving behaviour (accelerating in a lower gear and with less assistance instead of full power)

Assuming that you usually cycle in support mode 1 or 2 and that you 100Watt extra you need to cycle around 20 km/h, then with the 9A / 324Wh you will achieve around two to three hours, or 60-70km. And with the 12A/432Wh battery about four to five hours, or 80-90km. The 14A/504Wh battery is good for about six hours of cycling, or 90-120km.
We also hear this from experiences of beixo owners.

The battery of the beixo electra electric folding bike is located on the luggage carrier. The battery is lockable and removable by sliding it backwards. The battery is not in the way and on top of the battery housing you can easily take something small with you, like your jacket. If you want to take more with you, there is the beixo bag carrier.

We supply Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) type batteries. These batteries can deliver a high current due to their low internal resistance. They also have a high power to weight ratio. A Li-Ion cell has no memory, so it does not need to be driven empty all the time.

The battery is the most expensive part of the electric bike. You can extend its normal lifespan using these tips:

  • Make sure the battery does not run down completely. Charge it before the motor assistance fails.
  • Never -but especially not in winter- put the bike away with a flat battery and use it regularly.
  • Store the battery in a cool place if you don't use the bike for a long time.
  • Charge the battery regularly, at least every other month.
  • Never charge the battery in the freezing cold. Take it indoors and charge at room temperature.
  • Store the bike preferably in a place that does not get too cold in winter and not too hot in summer.
  • Make sure the battery is fully charged before departure.
  • Pump the tyres well hard, this way you reduce resistance and your battery will last longer.
  • Choose the right gear so that you maximise your own energy.

Can a beixo be taken on a plane?

An ordinary beixo folding bike is generally allowed on the plane. This must then be done via the special baggage or sports equipment.

An electric beixo - with battery - is trickier to carry. The rules for carrying the Li-Ion battery vary from airline to airline. Sometimes the battery is allowed as hand luggage, sometimes not at all. This is because batteries fall under the Dangerous Goods Regulation. You can read more about this on the site of the IATA.

A call to your airline always gives clarity.

What engine is in a beixo?

The beixo electric folding bikes are equipped with a 250-watt front-wheel motor. Front-wheel motors are simple, powerful and robust. A big advantage is that you can ride off in any gear. The motor starts working as soon as you drive off. In addition, the power distribution is nicely divided between the front and rear wheel, making the bike stable to ride.

The electric smart has a mid-motor, coupled to the cardan shaft.
